Yoga and the Pelvic Floor

Dragonfly Pilates is excited to team with Jennifer Butera Yoga in bringing Leslie Howard's Pelvic Floor Workshop to Pittsburgh! Proper strengthening and stabilizing of the pelvic floor helps to create the correct foundation of each movement of the body. This is the true meaning of "core work." Whether you experience any of these conditions, or are just plain curious about this region of the body, this workshop is for you:


    • pelvic pain
    • leak when laughing or sneezing 
    • low back, hip, or groin problems
    • using the restroom too often 
    • prolapsed organs 
    • skin irritation 
    • pregnancy and birth
    • discomfort during sex or using tampons

In this workshop, we'll locate, assess, soften, stretch, strengthen, and exercise the muscle groups of the pelvic floor, discuss mula bandha, abdominal health, and how to utilize the pelvic floor in asana. NO YOGA EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Yoga Alliance CEC's provided. COST: $115 before March 3, $145 after March 3
About Leslie Howard: 

Leslie has practiced and taught yoga for over sixteen years in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a presenter for the Yoga Journal Conferences and is featured in the documentary, Yoga Woman. She is featured in online yoga videos at pranamaya.com and yogau.com. She recently designed a successful study for the University of California, San Francisco on yoga for incontinence. She is working feverishly on a book called Pelvic Revolution.

In this workshop we will explore manual, visual, and verbal cueing techniques that will help you effectively and efficiently teach and correct your clients. An emphasis will be placed on manual, or hands-on cueing techniques. We will start by evaluating your current cueing skills, discuss what works & what is appropriate, learn various techniques to enhance your skills, and finally practice the application of new techniques. Teaching is a lifelong, dynamic growth process; this workshop offers the opportunity to more effectively communicate the knowledge you already have with and use it to help clients. Sharing ideas and giving immediate feedback amongst fellow instructors will provide a fun and informative atmosphere beyond the lecture and formal presentation on the topic.

We’ve all heard that good posture can make you look 10lbs thinner, and we’ve been told over & over that correct alignment is important. But how can we check our own posture, let alone an entire class? Self-assessment and correction can seem next to impossible, but it IS possible and easy to incorporate into group classes or your own daily routine. We will review the basics of correct alignment and methodology for postural evaluation. You’ll learn techniques for self-assessments, postural awareness, and self-correction. Corrective / awareness exercises will be covered, as well as the use of props and how to integrate them into classes & workouts. This material is applicable to private training sessions as well as group classes.
